Electromagnetic flow meters (or magmeters) are a type of velocity or volumetric flow meter that operate pursuant to Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction – which states that a voltage will be induced when a conductor moves through a magnetic field. Magmeters can detect the flow rate of conductive fluids only. Early magmeter designs required a minimum fluidic conductivity of 1-5 microsiemens per centimeter for their operation. The newer designs have reduced that requirement a hundredfold to between 0.05 and 0.1.

 

An electromagnetic flowmeter consists of a non-magnetic pipe that is lined with an insulating material. A pair of magnetic coils is situated as shown in Figure 1, and a pair of electrodes penetrates the pipe and its lining.

 

If a conductive fluid flows through a pipe of diameter (D) through a magnetic field density (B) generated by the coils, the amount of voltage (E) developed across the electrodes--as predicted by Faraday's law--will be proportional to the velocity (V) of the liquid. Because the magnetic field density and the pipe diameter are fixed values, they can be combined into a calibration factor (K) and the equation reduces to:

magnetic flow meter (mag meterelectromagnetic flow meter) is a transducer that measures fluid flow by the voltage induced across the liquid by its flow through a magnetic field. A magnetic field is applied to the metering tube, which results in a potential difference proportional to the flow velocity perpendicular to the flux lines. The physical principle at work is electromagnetic induction. The magnetic flow meter requires a conducting fluid, for example, water that contains ions, and an electrical insulating pipe surface, for example, a rubber-lined steel tube.

If the magnetic field direction were constant, electrochemical and other effects at the electrodes would make the potential difference difficult to distinguish from the fluid flow induced potential difference. To show this in modern magnetic flowmeters, the magnetic field is constantly reversed, cancelling out the electrochemical potential difference, which does not change direction with the magnetic field. This however prevents the use of permanent magnets for magnetic flowmeters.

OPERATION

Transit time flow meters use two transducers that function as both ultrasonic transmitters and receivers. The flow meters operate by alternately transmitting and receiving a frequency-modulated burst of sound energy between the two transducers. The burst is first transmitted in the direction of fluid flow and then against fluid flow. Since sound energy in a moving liquid is carried faster when it travels in the direction of fluid flow (downstream) than it does when it travels against fluid flow (upstream), a differential in the times of flight will occur. The sound’s time-of-flight is accurately measured in both directions and the difference in time-of-flight calculated.

Handled Ultrasonic Flow Meter utilizes two transducers that function as both ultrasonic transmitters and receivers. The transducers are clamped on the outside of a closed pipe at a distance from each other. The transducers can be mounted in V method in which case the ultrasound transverses the pipe twice, or W method in which case the ultrasound transverses the pipe four times, or in Z method in which case the transducer are mounted on opposite sides of the pipe and the ultrasound transverses the pipe only once. The selection of mounting method depends on pipe and liquid characteristics. When flow meter works, two transducers transmit and receive the ultrasonic signal which travels firstly downstream and then travels upstream. Because ultra sound travels faster downstream than upstream, there will be a difference of time of flight (delta t). When the flow is still, the time difference (delta t) is zero. Therefore, as long as we know the time of flight both downstream and upstream, we can work out the time difference and the flow velocity (V) and flow v (Q) the follow-ing formula.

Electromagnetic flow meters feature an obstruction-free design which eliminates flow impediment and operate with electrodes embedded on opposite sides of the flow tube or sensor to pick up the signal. Mag meters perform extremely well in many municipal and processing applications and have become the meter of choice for measuring conductive liquids such as water or slurry.

The main function of a hydraulic flow meter is to determine the efficiency and accuracy of the systems operation and performance.

The term hydraulic flow meter is a generic method for describing a hydraulic flow measuring device. Since hydraulic fluids come in different viscosities and with different flow rates, hydraulic flow meters are adjusted and produced to fit the conditions of the type of fluid they are measuring. A hydraulic flow meter can be positioned in any part of a hydraulic line to identify the flow rate. Since not every hydraulic system is the same, there are flow meters with varying port sizes to fit different systems. The meter itself has three main parts, which are the device, a transducer, and transmitter.

The transducer on a hydraulic flow meter measures the velocity of the liquid. They can calculate the flow level or the amount of flow. The transducer senses the passage of the flow through the measuring device and sends a signal to the transmitter. The volume of the flow is proportional to the cross sectional area and the fluid velocity with the mass flow being proportional to the density and volume of the fluid. The data from the calculations appears on the hydraulic flow meter gauge.
